MINISTRY SKILLS

The third focus we have is on ministry skills, developing ministry hands. All Nazarene ministerial education includes ministry experience, because we not only want you to grow the knowledge in your head, and fuel the passion of your heart, we also want to introduce you to ministry skills that increase the ability of your hands. We want to help you more effectively “DO” ministry.

A major focus of Dr. Reeder and the Course of Study (COS) committee is resourcing District Board’s of Ministry. The purpose of this page is to help gather a complete list of ministry skills for our Boards of Ministry we believe an ordained minister should develop during their three years of full-time or six years of part-time ministry experience. 1 (CA) Church Administration

  • Prepare a Church Board agenda

  • Chair a Church Board meeting

  • Understand Robert’s Rules of Order

  • Help a Church Board design and set goals

  • Plan/lead a board strategic planning session

  • Evaluate the condition of a church building

  • Understand what repairs can be done by volunteers, and what repairs need to be done by a professional.

  • Use a computer

  • Do research on the web

  • Do a background check

  • Fill out the Annual Pastor’s Report

  • Prepare and run a nominating committee meeting

  • Prepare and run an annual church meeting

  • Know how to keep an accurate membership roll

 

 2 (DP) Discipleship

  • Prepare a Bible study

  • Write a Bible study/Sunday School class

  • Prepare materials for a cell group

  • Disciple an individual

  • Disciple a small group

  • Know how to send SDMI stats to the District

 

3 (EV) Evangelism

  • Follow-up on visitors

  • Lead someone to Christ

 

4 (LD) Leadership

  • Lead a worship service

  • Lead a Cell Group

  • Personal scheduling – balancing church time and family time

  • Know when to make a phone call, when to write a letter, and when to have a conversation in person

  • Know how to communicate important information to your congregation

  • Design/distribute a church newsletter or web site

  • Know what your NMI president/counsel do

  • Know what your NYI president/counsel do

  • Know what your SDMI superintendent/counsel do

  • Give a candidate a Local Preacher’s License

  • Recommend a candidate for a District Preacher’s License

 

5 (PC) Pastoral Care

  • Prepare/preach a funeral

  • Prepare/preach a graveside service

  • Make a hospital call

  • Make a home visit/call

  • Premarital counseling

  • Perform a wedding

  • Crisis/issue counseling

  • Know when to refer someone to a professional counselor

  • Care for your Senior Citizens

  • Oversee compassionate ministries

 

6 (PCF) Personal & Church Finances

  • Understand how to read a financial report

  • Be able to create an annual church budget

  • Budget/save for long range projects, (General Assembly, Work and Witness trips, building projects)

  • Plan and lead a fund-raiser

  • Plan/execute a personal budget

  • Prepare and run a finance committee meeting

  • Plan and direct a Faith Promise service/campaign

 

7 (PR) Preaching

  • Write a sermon

  • Deliver a message

  • Plan a sermon series

 

8 (RP) Relationships

  • Know how to resolve conflict

  • Develop and sustain healthy relationships with other Nazarene pastors

  • Develop and sustain healthy relationships with non-Nazarene pastors

  • Know your role in District events and activities

  • Know how to serve on a District committee/board

  • Serve as a counselor at children’s/youth camps

 

9 (SF) Spiritual Formation

  • Pray publicly

  • Sustain a healthy personal devotional life

  • Develop/lead a congregational prayer ministry

 

10 (TC) Teaching

  • Teach a children’s lesson in a church service

  • Be able to explain Sanctification

  • Teach a Bible study/Sunday School class

  • Write/teach a membership class
